Operator (Bartlett, 2015) Narrative: We follow an emergency service operator during a night shift in a fire control room. The emergency operator gets a call from a young mother, Gemma, who has accidentally fallen asleep and was awoken by a room full of smoke. Panicking Gemma tells the operator that her child is trapped upstairs as the flames block her path, the operator tells the young mother not to panic and that the fire brigade is on its way but the mother insists on getting to the child. Gemma manages to get to their child just as the fire brigade arrives to save them. The operator in this story is constantly trying to clam Gemma, telling her that shes 'doing so well' to keep her calm, giving us an interesting perspective of this type of situation.   Representation: The film looks into a group of essential workers within the emergency service industry that are often overlooked. Tight Jeans (Ekaragha, 2008) Narrative: The Narrative follows three black teenagers as they become frustrated with their friend who they're waiting for. As they're waiting a white man wearing skinny jeans walks past, the boys look at him as he walks past until one of them asks the question "How can a man wear jeans that tight?" This question sparks a comedic back and forth between the three boys and launches them into the reason that some men wear tight jeans is based around race and culture they're surrounded with. Representation: The representation of Black teenage Londoners, during the time the short film would have been released the film follows a group of people often overlooked in society.   Echo (Arnold, 2013) Narrative: This girl doesn't turn out to be up to what people think. Echo follows a 17 year old girl, Caroline, as she suddenly receives a phone call with some tragic news. Shes told that her Dad has gotten involved in a motorbike accident, panicking she tries tries to get something from her bag. Being in a public area, Caroline is approached by a stranger to see Caroline was alright, kindly they give her money for a taxi to the hospital.  Unexpectedly the girl gets out the taxi and goes home, later on revealing that it was all a ruse to get money from unsuspecting strangers. Curious, Caroline's little brother follows her to finds out what she's up to. During one of Caroline deceptions is interrupted by her little brother. Her little brother asks "how does that man know about what happened to dad?" and revealing to us that their Dad actually died from a motorbike accident. SLAP (Roland, 2015) Narrative: Slap is a 2015 coming of age short film about a teenage boxer expressing himself through feminine attire and makeup to give him a sense of freedom, confronting the restrictive standards of masculinity. The film begins with our protagonist, Conner, putting on makeup until his father calls for him, were Conner panics and hides the makeup. We cut to him boxing, then introduced to Archie and Lola (his girlfriend). Conner tells Lola he’s ‘training’, but in fact he’s wearing a dress and makeup. This version of himself looks happy and free until he’s interrupted by Archie being chased and beaten by a thug. Conner hesitates before helping Archie, revealing his secret. Archie seems to except Conner and keeps it a secret. Until Lolas party were it all blows up. Conner decides to dress how he wants to dress but is insulted, Lola blows up at Conner, were Archie betrays him and adds to the hate. Over (Threlfall, 2015) Narrative: A short film based on true events that happend on 9th September 2012, a crime scene unravels through the use of reverse chronological story telling of a mysterious death in a quiet suburb in England. The film starts with the end, from when the body was cleared up to when the body first got there, we are slowly fed information as the film progresses.  Static shots are spliced together to create an interesting minimalist form of storytelling through the use of very simple slow-paced shots which makes the film stand out. The short film gives us context of when we have just witnessed through the use of plain text on screen describing the true events that took place on 9th September 2012.  Representation: The film is meant to highlight the lengths that Immigrants would go through to get away from countries in wars or in poverty, and wanting a better life in places like England.   Short Film planning Plot -  Our main protagonist, April, is peacefully a mysterious book titled 'Witchcraft and spells' until they're interrupted by the sound of somebody at the door. Checking to see who it was an unexpected suitcase sits on the doorstep with no one in sight. Out of curiosity April brings the suitcase inside their house.   Short Film Planning - Plot When writing up an overview of my short films plot I need to be sure to include: I need direct reference to the three act structure Who are my characters? How many characters am i going to have? What are the characters role in my story’s Narrative How will my film work with elements of film form such as; Cinematography (including lighting), Mise-en-scene, Editing, Sound, Performance. How has the portfolio of short films has influenced me in terms of techniques and use of film form and themes. The film cant be to complicated as it has to fit within 4 - 5 minutes.
